Global Youth Service Day

The Senior Citizen Prom was jointly hosted by a total of 68 youth volunteers from the Ottawa High School's NHS (National Honor Society) and the Ottawa Volunteer Center's Youth Action Council to make this year an even bigger success than years prior. Attendance had been dwindling the past few years but jumped by 75% up to 50 Senior Citizens attending the event at Ottawa High School. With additional marketing and community awareness provided by YAC (utilizing GYSD grant funds from KVC), youth volunteers attracted more senior citizens as well as volunteers and youth attendees. In total the 68 youth volunteers contributed 211 hours of service.

The Senior Citizen Prom gave youth the chance to get more involved with the older generations and for the senior citizens to share stories and tell what life was like when they were in high school. The senior prom was a night to make a bridge between generations that don’t normally interact with each other and gave the community a sense of unity.
